Histioteuthis berryi: Photophore Pictures

Richard E. Young and Michael Vecchione

Photographs below to the right are of a preserved H. berryi and show the basic photophore groups, from different views, with superimposed lines and dots to emphasize the photophore groups. Photographs below to the left are the same pictures without superimposed lines and dots so that the photophores can be seen without obstruction. The superimposed lines are formed by first placing white dots over the pigmented, photogenic cups of all photophore in a particular group. The dots are then joined by a line of the appropriate color.

The color coding of the lines is as follows:

Lower middle - Left-oblique views of the head. Lower lower middle - Lateral views of the left side of the head. Bottom - Dorsal views of the head.Photographs by R. Young.

The two photographs below are of the holotype. On the left, a white arrow points to a small aberrant photophore that is missing in most specimens. On the right, the large simple photophores of the dorsal surface show up especially well.
