Containing group: core Notholaena

Introduction

This scale-covered cloakfern, like its close relative N. aschenborniana, is most likely to be confused with species of Cheilanthes rather than with other Notholaena species. Underneath the scales, however, is the layer of farina characteristic of all species of core Notholaena. It is one of the few species of core Notholaena that make it across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and extends into Guatemala (Mickel & Smith 2004).

Characteristics

The brittle leaves of N. galeottii can get surprising large for a cloak fern, with some leaves reaching over 40cm long. The stipes and rachises of this species are clothed in attractive reddish scales, unlike the dominant whitish hairs of N. aschenborniana. For more information on distinguishing these species, see the N. aschenborniana page.

Discussion of Phylogenetic Relationships

Single-locus chloroplast data (Rothfels unpublished) place N. galeottii as the strongly supported sister species to N. aschenborniana, in core Notholaena I.

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
