Introduction

This species is apparently endemic to the Atlantic coastal forest of Brazil.

Characteristics

Members of the clade of Lyces aurimutua, L. annulata, L. cruciata, L. minuta and L. tamara are recognizable by abdominal markings: they share a lateral orange stripe and a dorsal transverse orange band on A1.

Nomenclature

The name employed for this species is apparently a junior subjective synonym of two older names - Bombyx jesuita Fabricius, 1787, and Josia fulvia Hübner, 1822. In an effort to preserve nomenclatural stability, Miller (2009) has indicated that these older names have not been used as valid names of taxa since before 1899 and that the name Josia aurimutua Walker, 1854, has been exclusively employed to refer to this species. Therefore, under ICZN Art, 23.9.1, Lyces aurimutua (Walker), 1854 is a nomen protectum, and Bombyx jesuita Fabricius, 1787, and Josia fulvia Hübner, 1822, are nomina oblita.

This page is a Tree of Life Leaf Page.

Each ToL leaf page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a leaf at the tip of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a leaf and a branch of the Tree of Life is that a leaf cannot generally be further subdivided into subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
