Auranticordis
Auranticordis quadriverberis
David Bass, Tom Cavalier-Smith, and Chitchai ChantangsiCharacteristics
Marine tetraflagellates with one large nucleus; four posteriorly directed and homodynamic flagella inserted subapically and bundled together within a ventral longitudinal groove; all flagella are about one cell length; cell shapes are prominently lobed, ovoid or inverted heart-shaped; nucleus is located at anterior end of cell with nucleoli; cells lack test or cell wall; minute orange muciferous vesicles distributed in linear rows over the entire cell; corrugated cell surface; cytoplasm with pale orange pigmented bodies, usually concentrated at the anterior end; black inclusion bodies usually present at anterior part of the cell; cytoplasm with lipid storage granules; locomotion by slow gliding; organisms show some degree of cell fragilities. Only one species, Auranticordis quadriverberis, has been described thus far. This species is the only known free-living cercozoan zooflagellate with four posterior flagella.
