Containing group: Sarginae

Introduction

Ptecticus is a speciose, cosmopolitan genus, with its species diversity mostly centered in the Neotropical and Oriental zoogeographic regions. The Nearctic fauna is the most depauperate bioregion, with 5 species. Ptecticus adults are often collected aggregating around rotten fruit and fungus. P. trivittatus is abundant around compost heaps in the Eastern United States (Woodley 2001).

Characteristics

Ptecticus can be distinguished from other Nearctic Sarginae by the bare eye, the absence of a distal projection on the calypter, and the anteriorly concave antennal pedicel, with the postpedicel on a finger-like projection (James 1981).

This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.

Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
