Melampias Hübner 1819

Melampias huebneri van Son 1955

Andrew V. Z. Brower
Containing group: Ypthimina

Introduction

A monotypic genus from South Africa.

Nomenclature and synonymy

It is unusual that the date of the name of the type species is 150 years later than the date of description of the genus. In this case, Hübner's original type for the genus, Papilio hyperbius Linnaeus 1764, is invalid, being a junior homonym of Papilio hyperbius Linnaeus 1763 (now Argynnis hyperbius (L.)).

This page is a Tree of Life Leaf Page.

Each ToL leaf page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a leaf at the tip of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a leaf and a branch of the Tree of Life is that a leaf cannot generally be further subdivided into subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages.

For a more detailed explanation of the different ToL page types, have a look at the Structure of the Tree of Life page.
