Galiteuthis armata

Introduction
G. armata, the type species of the genus, is rather large (max. known 610 mm ML - Roper & Jereb, 2010) like other species in the genus. This Atlantic species is very similar to the North Pacific G. phyllura but morphological or molecular data that substantiates the separation of these species is lacking.

- Distal most stalk suckers just proximal to club seem to be in two series on either side of the stalk (four series total) before merging into the normal two series.

- Tubercules
- At fused funnel/mantle locking apparatuses: 2-4 tubercules but exact arrangement uncertain.
- At fused head/mantle locking apparatus in nuchal region: None.
Life History
The chromatophore in a juvenile (see below) are few in number, each chromatophore is slightly elongate and chromatophores on the mantle are located mostly on the lateral surfaces of the mantle.
Distribution
TYPE LOCALITY: ? Nice, Mediterranean Sea.
G. armata is found in tropical and north temperaterate waters of the Atlantic (Nesis, 1982/87).
