This tree diagram shows the relationships between several groups of organisms.
The root of the current tree connects the organisms featured in this tree to their containing group and the rest of the Tree of Life. The basal branching point in the tree represents the ancestor of the other groups in the tree. This ancestor diversified over time into several descendent subgroups, which are represented as internal nodes and terminal taxa to the right.
You can click on the root to travel down the Tree of Life all the way to the root of all Life, and you can click on the names of descendent subgroups to travel up the Tree of Life all the way to individual species.close box
Archangiopteris was previously considered an independent genus from Angiopteris, but molecular studies (Murdock 2008) have proven that the genus is deeply embedded within Angiopteris in a broad sense, even though it does form a monophyletic clade within this genus.
This clade differs from other Angiopteris in having once pinnate fronds with creeping dorsiventral rhizomes. In these characters the genus has some similarities with Danaea, but in this genus the pinnae are always opposite. The genera Protomarattia and Protangiopteris are well embedded within the Archangiopteris clade and cannot be kept separate for that reason.
Species of the Archangiopteris clade occur in Southern China, Hainan, Taiwan and Northern Vietnam in the understory of tropical forests.
